Fit for human consumption, I make this food for Bruno to show him that I love him to the moon and back. For reference, he is a 12-pound Maltese/Poodle mix, and he eats 1/3 cup of this homemade food daily, combined with 1/3 - 2/3 cup of Life's Abundance kibble.
one small sweet potato
2 small carrots
1½ pounds ground turkey
one egg
small handful of uncooked oats
one can (6 ounces) wild-caught salmon, drained
Rinse the sweet potato, peel it, cut off any bad spots, and use a box shredder to shred it. Do the same with the carrots.
Heat a large Dutch oven over medium heat; crumble ground turkey into Dutch oven, then add shredded sweet potato and carrots. Use a wooden spoon to break up the turkey mixture; continue stirring and cooking the mixture over medium heat until turkey is cooked through and shredded vegetables have softened. Turn off heat but leave pot on the burner. Add the egg and a handful of oats, stir to combine, cover the pot and allow it to rest for 30 minutes. Remove the lid and add canned salmon, stirring to incorporate. When the mixture is cool enough to handle, use a 1/3 measuring cup to create mounds on a wax paper-lined sheet. Freeze for several hours, then pop off the frozen mounds into a large Ziploc bag. Each night when I feed Bruno, I move one frozen mound from the freezer to the refrigerator, allowing it to slowly thaw before the next night's meal.
(Below photo is my old recipe when I added broccoli and rice. You get the general idea.)
