Bruno's Dog Food

Fit for human consumption, I make this food for Bruno to show him that I love him to the moon and back. For reference, he is a 12-pound Maltese/Poodle mix, and he eats 1/3 cup of this homemade food daily, combined with 1/3 - 2/3 cup of Life's Abundance kibble.

Bruno's Dog Food

(makes about 20 individual servings, 1/3 cup each)

one small sweet potato
1 pound pasture raised ground beef
3/4 cup white rice
2 cups water, or mixture of water and up to one cup bone broth
2 small carrots
8 inches of broccoli stalks or stalks with some broccoli florets

Rinse the sweet potato, cut off any bad spots, and use a knife to puncture the skin multiple times. Microwave, covered, for 5-6 minutes. Remove from the microwave, slit the potato open to allow to cool. Set aside.
Meanwhile, in a large Dutch oven, cook ground beef over medium heat until no longer pink, breaking it up into small crumbles. Leave ground beef and its fat in the Dutch oven, add white rice and stir to combine. Add 2 cups water or broth/water mix, stir to combine, cover the pot and set a 20 minute timer. Reduce heat to low, and stir occasionally. While beef and rice are cooking, peel and shred the carrots. Shred the broccoli. When timer has 8 minutes remaining, add shredded carrots and broccoli to the Dutch oven. Stir to combine, then cover. For the next 8 minutes, cook over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally and then covering again. If needed, add more water or broth to prevent sticking. When timer is done, turn off the heat and keep the lid on. Allow to sit for at least 30 minutes; the mixture will firm up a bit. Remove sweet potato flesh from its skin, then add it to the Dutch oven mixture and stir to combine thoroughly. When the mixture is cool enough to handle, use a 1/3 measuring cup to create mounds on a wax paper-lined sheet. Freeze for several hours, then pop off the frozen mounds into a large Ziploc bag. Each night when I feed Bruno, I move one frozen mound from the freezer to the refrigerator, allowing it to slowly thaw before the next night's meal.
